Trilobites were hard-shelled aquatic creatures that swam the Earth's ancient seas between 520 and 250 million years ago. They went extinct long before dinosaurs even came into existence, and are prized by amateur palaeontologists and fossil collectors. Trilobites are actually an extinct class of arthropod, a phylum that includes spiders and scorpions.
This 380 million-year-old British trilobite, Barrandia homfrayi, is from the Llanvirn Series of Leigh, Shropshire.
