Trilobites were hard-shelled aquatic creatures that swam the Earth's ancient seas between 520 and 250 million years ago. They went extinct long before dinosaurs even came into existence, and are prized by amateur paleontologists and fossil collectors. Trilobites are actually an extinct class of arthropod, a phylum that includes spiders and scorpions.
This particular species of trilobite, Crotalocephalus, had a near-global distribution around 400 - 350 million years ago.
Mounted on a plinth of oak, the trilobite is a particularly large specimen at around 8cm in length
