Dating from the Chinese Song Dynasty (960 - 1127 A.D.), this beautifully worked terracotta tile displays a high relief monkey god figure playing a side-drum and holding a rattle.
Ancient China is synonymous with the production of beautiful ceramics and porcelain ware. First appearing in the Palaeolithic era twenty thousand years ago, Chinese ceramics have ranged from hand-built pottery vessels fired in bonfires, to intricately decorated bricks and tiles, to world-renowned fine Chinese porcelain made for the Imperial palaces and courts.
This particular example of ancient Chinese art is over 34cm long. Mounted on a plinth of aged oak and textured steel, the display stands over 42cm tall.
