Dating from the Chinese Song Dynasty, this beautifully worked ceramic wall tile displays a cluster of fruit and tendrilled foliage complete with a thousand-year-old monkey clinging to the branches.
Ancient China is synonymous with the production of beautiful ceramics and porcelain ware. First appearing in the Palaeolithic era twenty thousand years ago, Chinese ceramics have ranged from hand-built pottery vessels fired in bonfires, to intricately decorated bricks and tiles, to world-renowned fine Chinese porcelain made for the Imperial palaces and courts.
This particular example of ancient Chinese art is simply framed in black Obeche and measure c. 44cm x 28cm.
